How The World Works

What are Tsunamis?

Tsunamis are a series of massive waves, caused by an undersea disturbance, like volcanoes and earthquakes. The huge waves travel in different directions from the Epicenter (undersea disturbance). They can usually travel as quickly as 450 miles per hour. The waves grow to enormous heights and then crash to the shore and cause a colossal amount of destruction. Also, the waves can grow as high as 100 feet, that is, as high as skyscrapers in a city. An interesting fact about tsunamis is that "Tsunami" is a Japanese word meaning "  Harbour wave". A giant tsunami hit Mindoro Island on 15 November, 1994 and traveled to many different places in the Phillipines.
