How The World Works

How are Tsunamis formed?

One of the ways tsunamis are formed is when two of the tectonic plates are forced together and collide. If this happens under the sea and one plate slides under the other, the strain on the upper plate becomes too much. It lurches up and a vast amount of a water gets pushed upwards. This could cause a dangerous and deadly tsunami. They also happen due to violent, sudden movements of the ocean floor, like when undersea volcanoes(the shield volcano) erupt or when an unexpected earthquake hits. The waves zoom at a brisk, rapid speed beneath in deep water, but when they get closer to the coast, they swell into an immense wave and crash onto the shore (maybe causing some damage). Sometimes if the sudden movement was quite close to shore, it can cover a great amount of the land. An example of a tsunami formed by a disturbance is when a sudden earthquake produced a vast wave almost six meters high on Mindoro Island, 15 of November in 1994.

Types of Tsunamis?

There are three main types of tsunamis which are called the local tsunami, the regional tsunami, and the pacific wide tsunami. The local tsunamis are usually caused when shield volcanoes erupt and they are often the most dangerous tsunamis because they give little warning between the triggering event, and the arrival of the tsunami. The second tsunami is the regional one. 75% of tsunamis are considered to be regional events but they are less dangerous then the local tsunami. The final tsunami I've written about is the pacific wide tsunami. Those tsunamis are the least common. Only 3.5% of tsunamis are this immense. Although the fact that they are least common, they can create the most tremendous damage due to their massive waves and they can cover a great amount of land.

Effects on people and the land.

Tsunamis can be treacherous to people and it can also effect the land. It effects people by killing, injuring and drowning (any of them). Also, tsunamis can destroy the land and buildings near the coast. Some of the lands damage caused by tsunamis are when floods happen. A tsunami's massive waves can get blocked in a part of the land and cause a flood, drowning plants and all living things. A dangerous situation with a tsunami is when someone, or maybe you, could be playing joyously on the beach when suddenly, an unexpected vast wave looms above you. You could drown, be thrust out to the bitterly cold ocean, launched on to sharp rocks or any other dreadful events. I definitely would not approve of being caught up in a ghastly tsunami. It would be safest to head higher up the coast and away from the incoming wave. The 1994 Mindoro Island tsunami hit 40 Km along the Northern and eastern shores of Mindoro, then surged to Baco. Thats where the tsunami clashed with the shore line. Residents assumed it was just a strong gush of wind and rain that hit the coast. Sadly, it damaged alot of land and drowned 41 people Next, the dreadful tsunami traveled onto Calapan, the Philippine capital. There, the tsunami drowned 17 people. But there is still more! More than half of the victims were young joyous children under the age of ten. In all, at least 1,500 houses were swept away and more than 7,500 properties were damaged or demolished. The tsunami also washed away 24 bridges, cutting off many towns and villages. More than 78 people lost their cheerful lives in the deadly tsunami.
